A pensioner who lost nearly £2,000 when thieves stole her handbag is warning shoppers to be on their guard.
Doris Lewis, 76, spoke out after police said crime gangs are responsible for a recent spate of purse thefts, in which elderly and vulnerable people have lost thousands of pounds.
The widow, of Bailey Bridge Road, Braintree, was targeted in the town’s Sainsbury’s store in Tofts Walk in March.
She had withdrawn the cash earlier that day and intended to give some of it to her granddaughter to pay her tuition fees.
