Campaigners handed a petition of nearly 2,000 signatures to council bosses in a bid to save an activity club for disabled youngsters.

Mencap representatives handed the document to Essex County Council, a week after a highly charged meeting between parents and officials.

Forty families from across the Braintree district use Braintree Mencap’s playscheme and activity club for children and teenagers.

But it has lost £40,000 in funding from the council and NHS Mid Essex Primary Care Trust, meaning the scheme could fold next month.

Ray Gooding, cabinet member for children’s services, is reviewing the council’s decision.
