Police have arrested a driver and are still searching for a passenger who fled the scene after a car smashed into a lamp post.

The BMW M3 Convertible car struck the lamp post in Boars Tye Road, Silver End, shortly after 10am on Wednesday.

A section of the road was closed for approximately three hours while the car was recovered and debris was collected.

The driver, an 18-year-old man from Basildon, was taken to Broomfield Hospital in Chelmsford with serious leg injuries.

He was subsequently arrested on suspicion of committing a motoring offence, and has been released on police bail until July 1, pending further enquiries.

A police spokesman said: “The driver of the vehicle appears to have lost control and struck a lamp post.

“The two male occupants were both injured. The driver is now recovering at home.”

However the front seat passenger in the car, who fled the scene before emergency services arrived, is still wanted by police.

The spokesman said: “It is still not known who he is or where he is.

“He did visit the nearby McDonalds restaurant in Cressing Road, Braintree, after the crash.

“Anyone with information is urged to contact Braintree police station on 101.”
