Braintree: Long delays after bridge strike at Hatfield Peverel
Motorists are facing long delays after a crash which damaged a bridge on the A12.
Two lanes of the southbound A12 are blocked after a digger, that was being carried on a lorry, struck the Wellington Bridge and fell on to the carriageway.
There were no injuries.
The incident, which happened shortly after 5pm, resulted in long delays on the southbound carriageway.
It is estimated it could take up to two hours to lift the damaged digger.
There are also delays on the northbound carriageway as drivers slow down to look at the crash scene.
A structural engineer has been called to examine the bridge, which carries traffic on to the northbound A12 at Junction 20B.
Access on to the bridge has been closed for safety reasons.
