Most Braintree residents agreed with a survey that people had become more dishonest.
Brits are less honest now than they were a decade ago, according to research on integrity by Essex University academics.
The survey, conducted last year with more than 2,000 participants, found people more tolerant of extra-marital affairs, smoking cannabis and underage sex than in 2000.
While falsely claiming benefits was the only act seen as more dishonest now than 12 years ago, with attitudes toward dropping litter staying unchanged.
The findings were released to coincide with the launch of the new Essex Centre for the Study of Integrity (ECSI).
People of Braintree joined in the debate on the Braintree and Witham Times Facebook page.
