Essex: Council chief takes a pay cut - then gets a bonus

Essex County Council boss Joanna Killian cut £4,000 from her salary - only to receive a £6,900 bonus.

Accounts show Ms Killian took home £289,173 in 2010/11 - £147,000 more than the Prime Minister - despite previously agreeing to take a five per cent wage cut.

The pay was topped up with a £6,900 bonus and an extra £1,100 towards her pension, despite County Hall having to make £98m worth of cuts.

Local Government Minister Grant Shapps accused Ms Killian of hiking her wage “through the back door.”

Ms Killian, who is also chief executive of Brentwood Borough Council, is now the highest-paid council chief in the country.

A council spokesman said her dual role saved the taxpayer money.

He added: “While Ms Killian did receive a one-off bonus of £6,900 in April, this was for work completed in year 2009/10.

“In October, Ms Killian voluntarily accepted a five per cent reduction in her annual salary and has received no base pay increase or bonus since then.

“To suggest she has had an increase in salary is completely wrong.”

Why would a public servant need to voluntarily take a pay cut? If she is told to take a pay cut, there is no choice, other than "there's the door".
How much money did her dual role save then?
Can Braintree and Witham please think a little more at the next general election! The Tories have done nothing for the towns, other than run them down, and top up their pensions.

So David Cameron 'runs' the country but earns £147,000 less than the leader of Essex County Council - and the difference - we can vote out Cameron - or whoever the prime moinister is at an election, but presumably this person is employed and we have no say in the matter - sickening comes to mind -.

This council spokesperson must think the public are stupid.

She may not have had an increase in her salary, according to the books, but she elected to take a paltry 5% pay cut (and lets face it - whats £4k when you're earning nearly £300k!!!), no doubt knowing full well she was in line for a bonus (no doubt written into her contract) to negate that pay cut.

And what exactly does she do to command such a wage -
talking business over lunch? Delegation of duties to sub-ordinates? Having meetings all day which actually achieve very little but cost the taxpayer quite a lot? Fiddling the books to make sure she and her ilk are fine whilst the council has to make cuts of £98m which affect the general public!?!!

Time to get rid of people like that and start paying the people who do the real work properly...
