Witham: MP calls on Foreign Office to provide more support for grieving family

David Cameron and Foreign Office officials have been pressed to support a grieving mum whose son was killed in a nightclub attack abroad.

Witham MP Priti Patel has raised the case again of Marie Heath, from Silver End, whose son Lee, 31, was killed in April.

Ms Patel, who raised the case in Parliament last month, met Foreign Office officials and the Victims’ Commissioner on Monday and has contacted the Prime Minister.

She said: “Whether crimes are committed at home or abroad victims and their families should be fully supported.

“The killing of Lee Heath was a terrible crime and I am concerned to see the limited amount of help available.

“In my meeting with officials and conversations with ministers, I have pressed them to ensure that the British authorities do all they can to assist the Heath family in these difficult circumstances.”

This is odd, so Ms Patel didn't actually do anything, other than ask the foreign office to continue doing their job?

Using a completely distraught family for a popularity contest, well, that's how it looks.

The Foreign Office doesn't always do enough to support British tourists and ex-pats who run into difficulties abroad. Ms Patel is simply doing her job as a constituency MP by raising this case in Parliament.

The idea that she would have done so without the knowledge or consent of the bereaved family is frankly laughable, like the level of ignorance displayed by the previous comments on this thread.

Rubbish the FO only give limited support in countries where British Government presence is not prevelant.

Priti Patel only raises soft items in order to increase her brand cachet within her party - bear in mind that she could potentially lose her ward under a redrawing of the boundaries then you'll realise she is acting in self preservation.

You obviously don't have a clue what you're talking about.

You claim that "the FO only give limited support" where "British Government presence is not prevalent", but you also state that the FO works "with very limited resources". How is it possible for the FO to offer "unlimited support" with "very limited resources"? The truth is that, even where there is a large consular presence, the FO offers only a very limited service to British tourists and ex-pats, and there are many well-documented cases of its standard of service falling sadly short of what we are entitled to expect.

Priti Patel is simply fulfilling her role as a good constituency MP by intervening on the behalf of, and at the request of, a bereaved family in a difficult situation. It's difficult to avoid the conclusion that your criticism has more to do with your having some kind of ideological axe to grind than any real objection to the way she does her job.

Even the FO wouldn't claim to offer "unlimited support" to British tourists and ex-pats, even where there is a large consular presence. There are frequent complaints about complacency and poor levels of service.

Priti Patel, scoring easy political points while avoiding the larger and more complicated issues?
