Engineers will be replacing 800 metres of gas mains over the next four months.
Temporary traffic lights will be put up in Cressing Road, Braintree, while National Grid carries out the work, which starts next week.
The company is investing over £150,000 in replacing the old metal gas mains with new, long lasting plastic pipes.
Temporary raffic lights will be used between the junctions with Stubbs Lane, Chelmer Road and Slough House Close while the new pipe is laid.
