Witham Town Council could help determine how sat navs direct traffic through the area.
Under new government proposals Essex County Council would be able to change road classifications to highlight the best route on maps and sat navs.
Essex County Council are the local authority which deals with highways and as the proposal is in consultation were unable to say whether the town council would be consulted about changes.
Steve Hicks, chairman of the town council's environment committee, hopes the county will consult smaller councils such as Witham.
