A rugby club faces closure unless it can pay off a hefty £10,000 utility bill and attract more players.
Witham Rugby Club has been charged £5,986.70 for electricity and £4,201.70 for gas for the last 13 months.
But current committee members say they had not received previous reminders and do not have the money.
