BRAINTREE has one of the highest rates of teen pregnancies in Essex.
The district came fourth out of 12 local authority areas, with 269 girls aged under 18 giving birth between 2006 to 2008, according to the Office of National Statistics.
It was also one of only three that saw the rate of teen pregnancies increase over a ten year period.
The number of births per 1,000 females aged 15 to 17 rose by 0.9 per cent between 1998-2000 and 2006-2008.
Chelmsford rose by 2.8 per cent, from 237 in 1998-2000 to 268 in 2006-2008, while Uttlesford's shot up by 22.6 per cent from 63 to 87 during that decade.
Basildon currently tops the table with 413 teen pregnancies at last count, followed by Tendring with 322 and Colchester with 316.
The Braintree District Local Strategic Partnership is now investing £50,000 into tackling teen pregnancies.
Research for the project showed that the high level is linked closely to the number of second pregnancies for young women under 20.
