A woman found in a river and declared dead at the scene has been named by police.

Rose Phillips, 69, of Larkspur Close, Witham, was found in the River Brain, Witham.

Police were contacted at 7.30pm yesterday following reports that a mobility scooter was found in the River Brain along River Walk near to its junction with Guithavon Road.

Officers arrived and found Rose in the river.

They pulled her out and attempted CPR, but she was certified dead at the scene.

A section of River Walk was closed for four hours while forensic collision investigators carried out their enquiries and the scooter was recovered.

A post-mortem examination will be carried out later this week.

Anyone who saw the Rose travelling on her red disability scooter between 6pm and 7.30pm on yesterday (Friday) evening is urged to contact investigating officers at Dunmow Road Policing Unit on 0300 333 4444.
