A rail watchdog is “very concerned” about a proposed new train station in Chelmsford.

A proposed new train station at Beaulieu Park, near Springfield, could have an adverse impact on Hatfield Peverel and Witham stations, according to the chief of a Witham-based rail group.

Countryside Properties and its development partner, L&Q, submitted an outline planning application for the new railway station last week.

The station, which is expected to open in Spring 2015, will include four platforms and it is expected that 60 per cent of passengers will travel to the station by foot, bicycle or bus.

However, David Bigg, Chairman of Witham and Braintree Rail Users’ Association, said he is worried it could affect Hatfield Peverel and Witham stations.

He said: “We are very concerned about the impact it could have elsewhere, particularly Hatfield Peverel, it could be devastating.”

He said he anticipated commuters travelling to the station at Beaulieu Park to make their journeys to London cheaper and he hoped it wouldn’t lead to Hatfield Peverel being downgraded, in terms of service.
