A WORKING party will investigate a proposal to revamp Braintree town centre.

The Chamber of Trade is looking into the potential of setting up a business improvement district (BID).

The scheme has been used successfully in New Oxford Street and has just been started in Witham's industrial estates.

And Colchester Council is looking to resurrect a BID in Colchester, after businesses voted against it in 2007.

It involves businesses paying a levy in addition to their business rates to spend on whatever they want over five years.

Brenda Baker, chairman of Braintree Chamber of Trade, said the group is looking for business people in Braintree who might want to be involved in the working party to see if the idea could work, before taking it further.
