Braintree: Police stop checks success

POLICE held one of their biggest multi-agency operations so far in Braintree.

Twenty five officers teamed up with ten representatives from VOSA, Braintree Council licensing and environmental health, and HM Revenue and Customs to stop check vehicles in Cressing Road, between Braintree Garden Centre and Galleys Corner.

Automatic number plate recognition equipment was also set up further up the road.

The team were looking for defects, motoring offences and other breaches of the law.

PC Shaun Hammond, who organised the event on Friday said four people were arrested - three in connection with theft and one for driving offences.

Three vehicles were seized because the drivers had no insurance and another two were prevented from being driven any further because they were not roadworthy.

Six penalty tickets were issued for vehicle defects.

And over 60 vehicles were tested for use of red diesel, which is designed for agricultural vehicles and is cheaper than normal diesel. All were fine.

Mr Hammond said: "It's coming up to Christmas and I was just trying to disrupt criminal activity and provide high visibility police patrols."
