Witham: Get set for carnival fun

Hundreds of people are sure to line the streets of Witham for the annual carnival.

The hard work of Witham Carnival Committee will pay off on Saturday as visitors turn out in force for Witham Carnival Tony Stote, the carnival committee chairman, said there will be about 40 floats, each of them a different interpretation of the theme Woodland Magic.

"The theme was a spur of the moment thing but I imagine there will be woodland scenes including things likes fairies, animals, trees, whatever," said Mr Stote.

Carly Victor, Paris Ayling, and Julia Street, were chosen as Witham Carnival Court back in April.

Last Saturday they were officially crowned in the Grove Shopping Centre.

The three Witham girls will have a busy day at the carnival as they will be one of the focal points of the procession.

Mr Stote said: "They are ready and raring to go."

On Saturday floats will start off at Witham Town Football Club before moving along Spinks Lane and along Newland Street. They will turn into The Grove, on to Maldon Road and finish up at Maldon Road park.

There will be a host of events in the park including donkey rides, a performance from WOW (Witham Operatic Workshop), three live bands, eight carnival courts and majorettes dancing to the Queen anthem It's a Kind of Magic.

There will also be a host of stalls including one for the Army.

Mr Stote said preparations for the event had gone well apart from one advertising banner being pinched from Crittall Road in the town.

"One banner was taken from a fence down by Dovercourt," said Mr Stote.

"It was an intentional take as it was securely fastened. It is disappointing but whoever took was not aware of the CCTV cameras.

"If they would like to return it incognito to the Town Hall in Witham we will say no more."

The 2009 procession will start at 1.45pm, be sure to get there early.
