Braintree: "Dangerous" gates to be changed

"Dangerous" gates at a play area need changing before an accident happens, a councillor warned.

Gates at the Chelmer Road play area in Braintree open out, something which Eric Lynch said could leave children at risk.

Mr Lynch, district councillor for Braintree East, told a full council meeting on June 22: "The two gates open out to the road which is dangerous to children.

"It should not have been done by this in the first place and we've to correct it."

He said it does not help that the gates are by a bend in the road and where there is an overgrown hedge, making it more difficult for drivers to see if a child was in the road.

Paul Partridge, Head of Operations at the council, said: “Gates into children’s play areas always open outwards. This is to stop dogs off their leads, being able to push through the gates and foul in the play area.

"However because of the proximity of the road to the entrance to this play area, it would be better that these gates open inwards.

"We are happy to make this alteration and have organised the work to take place within four weeks.”.
