Tributes have been paid to a Braintree College student who died in a head-on crash last night.
Charmaine Phillips, 17, from Braintree died following the collision on the A131 between the Broad Road and Marks Farm roundabouts.
She had been driving a red Rover 100 which was involved in an accident with a white Ford Ranger.
The Rover's front-seat passenger - a 17-year-old girl from Braintree - was in a critical condition, while a 19-year-old woman was in a serious, but stable condition at hospital.
Miss Phillips had been a student at Notley High School in Notley Road, Braintree.
Headteacher Simon Thompson said: “The news about Charmaine has been a real shock for the school.
"Charmaine was someone that, in her time at Notley, was unfailingly helpful and cheerful.
"Her bubbly personality and smile will be remembered by many staff, as will the fact that she was an “overcomer” who didn’t give up, but dealt with the problems life brought her.
"She was well-liked by students and staff and will be missed by many of us. Our sympathy goes out to her friends and family alike.”
The driver of the Ford, a 27-year-old man from Sudbury, is currently in a stable condition in hospital after sustaining an arm injury.
All the casualties were conveyed to Broomfield Hospital by land ambulance.
