Windows were smashed at a church hall causing almost £300 of damage.

St Nicholas Church Hall in Chipping Hill, Witham, was vandalised between midnight on November 10 and midnight on November 12.

The Rev John Suddards said it was toilet windows which were smashed in what he called an “unfortunate” incident.

The church launched an emergency appeal earlier this year to raise an estimated £20,000 after a 30ft strip of lead was stolen from the roof of the medieval church.

A hole was left which allowed rainwater in but after fundraising events and donations the money has almost been found and work could start soon.

The windows smashed at the rear of the church hall caused about £280 of damage and the cost of fixing the damage will be covered by insurance.
