A fire which devastated a grade II-listed block of apartments has been classified as an accident.

An investigation into a fire at Saling Grove, Great Saling, has determined the blaze was started by an electrical fault.

The fire, on June 17, destroyed the late-Victorian building in Piccotts Lane which had been converted into flats in 2000.

About 30 firefighters tackled the blaze which started at about 10.20pm.

They fought to control the fire for more than three hours and stayed throughout the night damping down and checking over until 5aam.

Scott Morrow, a spokesman for Essex County Fire and Rescue, said an “in-depth” investigation was concluded within the last fortnight and it was determined that the fire was an accident caused by an electrical fault.
