An avid fundraiser got on his bike after 40 years out of the saddle.

John Reeve, of Heathgate, Wickham Bishops, took part in the annual London to Southend bike ride.

He completed the 58-mile route with a friend in an impressive time of just over four hours.

Mr Reeve, who set up the Tim Reeve Charitable Trust in memory of his son who died from acute Leukaemia in 2005, said it was a really good day.

He said: “It was the furthest I had ever cycled, but I found it quite easy.

“I got a bike about three months ago, it was the first time I’d cycled in about 40 years, so getting used to the roads was a bit scary to begin with.

“It was a great event,as with all these things people are always very supportive and help each other out.”

Almost £200,000 has been raised for the trust since it was established.
