A BIG-HEARTED Braintree man who has collected for the Poppy Appeal for almost seven decades raised more than £1,600 last year.

Keith Shoat began collecting for the Poppy Appeal in 1956, raising 12 shillings and sixpence in his first year.

Mr Shoat, who is celebrating his 91st birthday this year, collected an incredible £1608 in 2023.

Gary Woodhouse of the auto parts store A1 Braintree contacted the Braintree and Witham Times on Mr Shoat’s behalf.

He described Mr Shoat as a gentleman regularly seen around Braintree town centre with his trusted wheelchair, which he calls his ‘horse’.

Gary said: “Many of you will know him by the name Keith Shoat or maybe by one of his other names - Pops or Grandad.

"He always wears a smile and is usually in his bright yellow jacket.”

He added: “Keith would like to thank each and everyone who has donated to this fabulous cause.

“Also, he would like to thank George Yard Shopping Centre for all their help over the past years - especially last year, where they gave him an empty warm unit to work from and supplied him with drinks and facilities.

"It’s great that there are people like Keith that give their time so freely.”
