Community plants together

5:57am Thursday 15th May 2008

COMMUNITY spirit is alive and well as Burnhamites show what you can accomplish when a community works together.

Proud town councillors and volunteers have applauded the efforts of pupils from all three of the town's schools as they help prepare the town for Anglia in Bloom.

And the "fantastic" efforts would not have been possible without the support of the community.

Pupils from St Peter's High School, Southminster Road, have made 113 hanging baskets and will be handing them over to Burnham Town Council to sell along the High Street and Station Road.

Carol Milton, volunteer garden project co-ordinator at St Peter's High School, said: "The community donate the seeds, the children make the baskets and grow the seeds in hanging baskets.

"These are then given to the town council and sold to make the community better.

"It is about working together, helping each other, getting to know each other and is brilliant for the town.

"I run a business in Burnham, live in Burnham and raise my family in Burnham and people are helping the town. It makes me proud."

And pupils at Burnham Primary School, Dunkirk Road, and St Mary's Primary School, Marsh Road, are also getting involved by producing planters large square boxes full of plants to display around the town.

Burnham Primary School will be providing four planters at the entrances to Burnham and St Mary's Primary School will be providing a special 100 years of the carnival display to be placed outside the town council offices in Chapel Road.

Sue Bache, a teacher at Burnham Primary School, said: "The children have really enjoyed the project and it's nice to see them appreciating the plants. It's good for Burnham to have a good appearance."

Councillor Ron Pratt, chairman of the Anglia in Bloom committee, said: "It is a fantastic effort. It involves the children of Burnham making Burnham a better place to live in. With Anglia in Bloom people take pride in their garden, pride in their street and pride in their town."
