Wartime fun at barns

9:00am Monday 12th May 2008

BEER and ice cream proved a welcome relief for re-enactment groups attempting to recreate warfare from the Napoleonic area in scorching temperatures.

The hardy bunch at this year's International Napoleonic Fair on Saturday and Sunday put on a brave face at Cressing Temple Barns as they recreated drills and displays in their woollen, dark-coloured uniforms.

Speaking yesterday, organiser David Smith said it was a far cry from last year's event, when it rained on both days.

"They are suffering a bit in the heat but it's absolutely glorious and it is such a beautiful setting," he said.

As well as re-enactments, there were traders, author Kate Allen, who specialises in regency romantic fiction, war games organised by Mike Oliver of the Southend Wargames Club and caterers supplying all important ice cream, real ale and cold drinks.

Actor Jason Salkey, who starred alongside Sean Bean in television series Sharpe, also greeted visitors.

Ten per cent of the profits were donated to Farleigh Hospice.
