The owners of a fish and chip restaurant have had their plans for a care home next to a trunk road quashed.

Braintree District councillors threw out the proposals put forward by Islanders Fish Restaurants & Take Away Ltd, based in Canvey Island, to demolish the disused Wayside Cafe, in The Street, Hatfield Peverel, situated next to the A12 slip road, and build a 42-bed care home on the site.

District councillors, Hatfield Peverel parish councillors and local residents stood united over their objections, which included it being inappropriate to put a care home on the edge of one of the busiest dual carriageways in the country.
