Confused motorists are unsure of what speed they should be driving on the new A120 bypass because the limit keeps changing.

While the road works were taking place the speed limit was reduced to 40mph, but when the bypass opened last month new 60mph signs appeared and the 30mph signs at the roundabouts were painted over.

A public notice appeared in the Braintree and Witham Times two weeks ago stating that the speed limit would be changed to 60mph, retrospectively dating back to August 28, but such a change requires a six week consultation period.

Braintree motorist Peter Stone said: "I assume that we will have to endure the cones and 40 limit for another five weeks because of somebody's incompetence?"

So what is the speed limit?

A spokesman for Essex County Council highways department said: "It is now a 60mph stretch. The old 30mph and national speed limit have been replaced, and this was advised and consulted on."
