AN immaculate display of penalty taking propelled Witham Town into the second round of the Velocity Cup and left manager Mark Ashford singing the praises of his young players.

Having seen their first round tie against Grays Athletic end 0-0 over 90 minutes, Witham proved faultless in the ensuing penalty shoot-out as they won 5-3.

It was an impressive display from the spot and Ashford was pleased to see the maturity shown by the youngsters as Sam Ashford, Jack Kemsley, L’Heureux Menga, Danny Norton and Luke Mallett all proved clinical.

He said: “What I was proud of with the penalties was that five players stepped forward to take them and four of them are very young.

“They were all fantastic penalties and that’s impressive from such young players.

“They wanted to take them and stepped up and dealt with that moment and that’s a great learning thing for them.

“You can say you want to take them and practice them but to do it is something else and to see the composure there was brilliant.”

Witham return to Bostik League division north action on Saturday with a trip to Dereham Town.
