Despite battling through more than half of their game with only ten-men, Coggeshall Town ensured FA Cup progress as a Ross Wall double sent the Seedgrowers through at the second time of asking against Berkhamsted.

The two had drawn 1-1 in the first qualifying round at West Street on Saturday so had to face each other in a replay and this time it was Coggeshall who had the edge as they won 2-1 to set up a home tie against Walton Casuals in the second qualifying round.

Coggeshall had to do it the hard way, though.

They took the lead early on when Wall put them ahead in the sixth minute, but Berkhamsted were quickly on level terms when Courtney Massey grabbed a seventh minute equaliser.

That was how the score stayed until half-time, but the numbers on the pitch did differ as Coggeshall were reduced when Curtis Haynes-Brown first picked up a yellow card on 42 minutes and was given his marching orders three minutes later for a second caution.

It meant the Seedgrowers would have to battle through at least 45 minutes with depleted numbers, but that didn't appear to faze them.

Wall struck the post, but wasn't to be denied and fired home on 57 minutes with the goal that proved to be the winner.

Also in cup action were WITHAM TOWN, who hosted Grays Athletic in the first round of the Velocity Cup.

It was 0-0 over 90 minutes between the Essex rivals, but Witham proved faultless in a penalty shootout as strikes by Sam Ashford, Jack Kemsley, L'Heureux Menga, Danny Norton and Luke Mallett fired them through 5-3.

STANWAY ROVERS were in Essex Senior Cup action but bowed out after a 4-2 defeat at Stansted.

Jake Thompson put Rovers ahead on 14 minutes, but two goals in quick succession by Jamie Bennett and Matt Frew gave the Airportmen the lead.

A Finn O'Reilly goal brought it back level before half-time, but even though Marley Okosi struck the woodwork for Stanway after the break, Stansted advanced thanks to second half strikes from Olly Bell and Callum Ike.

There was also action in Thurlow Nunn League division one south, but it proved to be an unhappy evening for leaders HALSTEAD TOWN as they suffered a first league defeat of the season in going down 4-0 at home in their local derby against COGGESHALL UNITED.
