MORE than 2,000 spectators lined the route as daredevil riders took part in a soapbox race on Saturday.

The third running of the Great Easton event was raising money for the Royal British Legion and the village community association.

And organisers are hoping that by the time they add up the proceeds, the 2017 total of £12,000 will be beaten.

A total of 28 karts took part in the event which had a theme of 'All Things Military' with designs ranging from an aircraft carrier to tanks.

Alastair Farr, chair of the organising committee, said: "The generosity of local businesses, particularly our platinum sponsors Little Easton Manor and transport company 24x7, was staggering.

"The sponsorship and supply of materials and equipment allowed us to cover the major upfront cost before the day kicked off

maximising the profit raised for charity."

In keeping with the theme, the Last Post was played before the racing, a wreath was laid at the village's war memorial and a minute's silence was observed.

The total raised from the event will be announced on www.facebook.com/GESoapbox.
