A fresh call has been made for a light indicator system to be installed after another lorry hit a railway bridge in Rivenhall last night.

Cllr James Abbott has again called for the system to be introduced after a lorry from Teakcroft attempted to drive under the bridge in Oak Road.

There is already a height warning on the bridge itself, but numerous drivers have either missed or ignored the sign and collided with the structure.

The indicator system, if installed, would only activate when a lorry over the height limit approaches the bridge.

Cllr Abbott said: “I have this evening again written to ECC about the latest incident at the Oak Road, Rivenhall End, railway bridge to call for a height warning indicator system to warn HGV drivers when they are in an over-height vehicle that they cannot get under the bridge.

“Officers are working on clearer conventional signage and I do support this via the Highways Panel, of which I am a member.

“But I believe that there will still be HGV drivers foolish enough to think they can risk trying to get under the bridge – or those that simply are not paying attention to the static signs.

“The linked bid to get a new section of weight restriction in the part of Oak Road that goes to join the A12 has been talked about for more than a decade now – far too long.

“I accept reactive signs may be expensive, but balanced to that, what happened earlier this evening."

Train services were forced to run at a reduced speed over the bridge from 5pm and disruption across Greater Anglia services continued until around 7pm.

Teakcroft was unavailable for comment.
