A clergeyman is calling for residents to get on their bikes and join him on a whistle-stop tour of the churches in his parish to raise money for their upkeep.

Robin King, the Archdeacon of Stansted, is taking on a 150 mile ride across north west Essex next month, calling the event the Tour de Stansted.

Mr King, who lives in Bradwell, is collecting sponsors for his challenge, with the cash to go to the Friends of Essex Churches Trust.

He said: "If I survive, the Tour de Stansted will be about 150 miles.

“I would love people to join me as I travel around, even if it is just for a couple of churches.

“If anyone would like to join me for the whole journey, they would be most welcome.”

The Friends of Essex Churches Trust will use the funds for church repairs and improvements across the county.

Chairman Jeremy Beale will be joining Archdeacon King on the day.

He said: "Church buildings need constant care and maintenance to keep them in good shape for everything from family fun days, school holiday clubs and concerts to christenings, weddings and funerals.

“Many people are surprised to find out that these treasures do not receive any government funds but instead rely on the goodwill of community-minded congregations, generous sponsors and enterprising fund-raisers like Archdeacon Robin who take a lead and go the extra mile.

“I am looking forward to getting my bike out and joining the Tour de Stansted for a stretch from High Easter.”
