A SPEEDING investigation could to be carried out in a residential area after complaints from residents that their pets are being killed.

A resident wrote to Witham Town Council complaining that some cars travel at speeds of up to 60 and 70 miles per hour along Allectus Way in Witham.

Part of the letter read: 'I along with several neighbours have had our pets killed or maimed along with the wildlife along the route.

'I myself have lost two cats plus two others who were injured resulting in hundreds of pounds in vet fees.

'I would like some speed restrictions put in place to safe guard our pets and sanity, as sitting in the garden on indoors having cars roaring past is quite nerve racking.'

At a transport sub-committee meeting held by the town council last week, it was decided a bid for a speed survey would be lodged with Essex County Council.

Braintree District Local Highways would carry out the survey and report back findings to the committee before any traffic calming measures are able to be put in place.

A spokesman for Essex Highways said: "Usually when a town or parish council request a speed survey, the Local Highway Panel will decide to carry it out, particularly if the Essex County Councillor for the area agrees and there is the budget available.

"The panel will want to consider this request as soon as possible when they receive it."
