TRAVELLERS in Great Notley have until 7pm this evening to leave a site after police issued a Section 61 order.

There were three caravans when the group first arrived at the site, off Highclere Road, last Wednesday but the number has increased since.

And, since their arrival, some residents have complained about members of the group riding noisy mopeds and other instances of anti-social behaviour.

But now, according to Braintree District Council, which owns the land, and Great Notley Parish Council, the travellers have been told to leave by 7pm tonight, Tuesday, July 31.

The police can issue a Section 61 order when members of an encampment use threatening, abusive or insulting words or behaviour towards the landowner, a member of their family, or someone working on their behalf.

It can also be used when they have caused damage to the land or property on the land.

It is not clear why the order has been issued in this case but police have sought to reassure residents.

A spokesman for Essex Police said: “A Section 61 order has been issued on an unauthorised encampment on Highclere Road, Great Notley.

"We were called on Thursday, July 26, after four vehicles and three caravans were seen on the site.

"Discussions are continuing with the landowners, Braintree District Council, as we monitor the situation.

“We are aware of concerns from residents in the area, and want to assure them that every report is taken seriously and we will continue to work quickly to ascertain the facts and whether any criminal activity is, has, or is likely to be committed.”

A spokesman for Braintree District Council said: “We are aware of the caravans and vehicles on land near Highclere Road on Great Notley.

“Essex Police have served a Section 61 notice on the travellers this afternoon, meaning that they are required to vacate the site by 7pm this evening.”
