A successful artisan food, drink and craft market is set to be extended into Witham in a bid to boost town trade.

Braintree Council's monthly street markets have so far proved a big hit with residents in Braintree, bringing hundreds of people to the town and in turn boosting business' footfall.

Now the council is set to trial the market in Witham this September, with ten stalls signed up to join the regular Saturday traders in Lockram Lane Car Park.

Chairman of Witham Chamber of Commerce Tina Townsend said the move was great news for the town.

"I think it is a fabulous idea and it is nice to see something positive being done in Witham," she said.

"The markets in Braintree have been a big success and I think replicating this would be great.

"It is just what the town needs in order to bring people in.

"I think it will be well supported and I hope the council consider bringing it back again."

Several popular traders from the Braintree street markets will be part of the Witham event.

Returning favourites Mex Appeal, Silks Brewery, The Bradford Street Meat Co, The Chimney Cake Boutique and The Junkyard Smoke Bloke will be offering their delightful treats for crowds.

Caversham Confectionary, ComplEAT Caterers, Ridiculously Rich by Alana, Polka Dot Cake Company and The Serious Shake Co complete the line up.

Tom Cunningham, councillor responsible for economic development, said: "We’ve listened to what our residents want and are excited to extend our popular street market to Witham.

"The markets in Braintree have been a huge hit so far that have helped to revitalise the market, boost local trade and bring a fantastic atmosphere into the town.

"We’re sure the market will be just as popular in Witham so I’d encourage people to come along, support local businesses and enjoy the street food and drink offering.”

If the trial proves a success, Braintree Council will look to make the market regular occurrence in the town.

The first event will take place on Saturday, September 8, in Lockram Lane Car Park, Witham.
