The MP for Witham has pushed for the A12 widening scheme to move forward after delays.

The scheme would see the road widened to a three-lane carriageway between Marks Tey and Chelmsford.

A public consultation for the changes closed in March last year, but plans have been delayed because of the north Essex garden communities scheme.

Priti Patel has now received a letter from transport secretary Chris Grayling confirming the Government is working with councils to avoid further delays.

Ms Patel said: “The widening of the A12 is one of the most important infrastructure projects in Essex.

“The benefits to businesses and the whole east of England economy are significant and I was pleased to secure the commitment to invest in this project from the Government.

“An announcement on the route alignment should have been made months ago but has been delayed as future housing and development plan ideas have been brought forward.

“These delays are causing anxiety to families living near the route and to businesses frustrated with the current delays they experience.”

It is hoped road improvements would lead to job creation across the region and a boost in economic growth.

Funding had been committed by the Government, but changes to housing and development plans delayed progress.

Ms Patel has also discussed the scheme with roads minister Jesse Norman.

She said: “I have been in close contact with Government Ministers over this as the scheme must be progressed as soon as possible.”
