THE Bell certainly tolled in the Seniors Club Championship at Braintree and left everyone wide eyed and amazed.

John Bell, playing off 27 handicap, piled up 49 stableford points, finishing seven clear of the rest of the field to win the over 18 handicap division.

However, 11-handicap Terry Barke went round in a gross 75 to amass 42 points and was declared the overall Senior Club champion while Andrew Bardell (15) finished second with 39.

Andy also won the nearest the pins prize.

The seniors also entertained their rivals from Stoke by Nayland in a friendly last week and ran out 4½-3½ winners.

There was a further fine display from Daniel Haylett in the men’s Midweek Stableford.

Playing off seven he signed for 43 points, five better than runner-up Thomas McGee (4) while a countback on 37 was required for third place with John Bradford (+3) edging out Charlie Nibbs (3).

Scoring wasn’t quite so high in the Saturday Stableford with a depleted field arguably because of the World Cup football.

Nevertheless, Trevor Hardy, off six, posted 36 points, one ahead of Rob Brand (18) with Rob Morrell (20) third with 34.

There were also clear winners of the Braintree Ladies Annual Foursomes event over 27 holes, with Debbie Blundell and Tricia Stallwood posting 58 Stableford points (38 + 20).

They finished three points ahead of runners-up Gill Barke and Margaret Margetts (33 + 22) with Joan Boulton and Carol Mehrer third on countback with 54 (33 + 21).
