An army veteran who suffered extreme injury after a motorbike accident is celebrating after securing victory in a prestigious racing competition.

Warren McKinlay, of Braintree, is part of Team BRIT, a team of all-disabled former military personnel.

On Saturday, Mr McKinlay and teammate Jimmy Hill came first in their class at the Aston Martin Owners Club GT Challenge.

After securing fourth place on the grid during qualifying, the duo battled to the front of the pack before taking the title at the chequered flag in their Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

The win means Team BRIT are one step closerr to achieving its ultimate goal of being the first ever all-disabled team to race in the world famous Le Mans 24 hours.

Mr McKinlay said: "We’re all buzzing from such a fantastic weekend.

"It means so much to me personally to have been part of the team at this milestone race, and to have taken pole position is just incredible.

"We’ve all worked so hard to get here and we’re showing that disabled drivers can compete on equal terms.

"I can’t wait to get behind the wheel again at the Aston Martin Le Mans Festival.”

After his motorcycle crash, former member of the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers Mr McKinlay suffered a traumatic brain injury and developed Cotard's Syndrome - where he believed he was dead.
