TWO word-loving youngsters have battled their way through to the final of a national spelling competition.

Felsted Prep pupils Michaela Holmes and Spencer Taker, both 12, have earned a place at the finals of the Year 7 Foreign Language Spelling Bee.

They secured their spots at the Oxford University event by coming second and fourth respectively in the regional finals.

All participants had to learn 50 German words per round, which they were required to translate from English during a 60 second countdown.

By the time they get to the nationals they will have learned a total of 200 words each.

Michaela said: "The whole experience was a lot of fun and it was impressive to listen to others pupils spelling words in German, French and Spanish at great speed.

"It has been really enjoyable to learn the 150 words and to try to spell them out loud, as fast as we can."
