A community group has vowed to fight any potential job losses after Witham Station undergoes its much-anticipated revamp.
In December, Greater Anglia unveiled proposals for the station, including an improved entrance building, new kiosk style shops and a two-storey car park extension.
However although the station’s ticket office is set to remain, it will operate from two windows - reduced from three.
This has lead to concerns over whether ticketing staff at the station may lose their jobs, something Greater Anglia has strongly denied.
David Bigg, chairman of Witham and Braintree rail Users’ Association, said: “The loss of the booking office window means a worse customer service.
“There are already queues when it is busy at Witham so things will get considerably worse.
“We will oppose the plans and we want answers as soon as possible.”
Mr Bigg said the group would fight to protect ticketing staff’s jobs if there was any suggestion there would be redundancies.
A Greater Anglia spokesman said: “We have submitted a planning application to make improvements to Witham station so that it better meets customers’ demands.
“Plans include a new entrance, additional car parking and more ticket machines.
“The ticket office would remain, with two windows.
“The current three windows are rarely used, as we have seen falling numbers of customers buying tickets from the ticket office.
“There are no plans to reduce staffing at the station.”
Braintree Council will have the final say on the redevelopment plans later this year.
