A scout group is celebrating after securing a £4,000 cash boost from plastic bag charges at a supermarket.

The 4th Braintree Scout Group has received the cash from Tesco's Bags of Help scheme after being voted for by members of the public.

Funding will be used to pay for trips throughout the year, allowing members to further enjoy the great outdoors by taking part in camping and exploring activities.

James Hopkins, 4th Braintree Scout Group leader, said: "We’re delighted to have won the recent voting round and would like to thank everyone in the local community that voted for us.

"The £4,000 grant will make a huge difference to the Beavers, Cubs and Scouts in the group – enabling them to take part in even more camps, trips and outdoor experiences for many years to come.”

Voting took place in the stores throughout January and February, with a new winning project set to be announced at the end of April.

Alec Brown, Tesco's head of community, said: "Bags of Help has been a fantastic success and we’ve been overwhelmed by the response from customers.

"It’s such a special scheme because it’s local people who decide how the money will be spent in their community. We can’t wait to see the projects come to life.”
