THE hunt to find a sex attacker wanted in connection with the attempted rape of a young woman in Witham continues nearly three months after the attack took place.

One man arrested in connection with the incident on Wednesday, January 3, will face no further action, while a second man arrested days after the attack has been released under investigation.

Town leaders have urged people to be “sensible” about going out alone at night, as the investigation continues.

Tina Townsend, chairman of the Witham Neighbourhood Watch group, said: “It is a concern there’s still someone out there and it’s a concern they haven’t been found. But it’s a case of being vigilant, watching out for one another and reporting suspicions through proper channels.

“People should also remember this person could have been passing through the area and may well not be here anymore. I think Witham is a safe place to live but it’s important to be sensible - I’m not going to go out wandering about by myself in the middle of the night.”

The victim, in her twenties, fought off her attacker during the incident in Powers Hall End, near Bluebell Close and Bramble Road.

Essex Police has confirmed no further action will be taken against a 33-year-old man arrested in connection.

A spokesman said: “Detectives are continuing to investigate the incident which happened at around 8.45am on Wednesday, January 3. The man is described as white, just under six foot tall, of large build, with dark bushy eyebrows, green eyes and short, shaved dark hair.

“He was seen wearing a black puffed jacket with a hood and bright blue denim jeans and was carrying a grey and black backpack and is believed to have spoken with a foreign accent.”
