A big name fitness firm whose gyms operate 24-hours a day is opening its latest premises in Witham, bringing eight jobs to the town centre.

Anytime Fitness has received permission to change the use of a 463sqm unit, just smaller than a tennis court, in Newland Street.

The company already operates 130 gyms in the UK and thousands across the world, with its unique selling point being members can attended at any hour of the day, any day of the week, using an electronic key fob.

A planning statement reads: "We are proposing a large financial investment in Witham and would very much like to be part of what makes the town viable and vital.

"Our gyms fall within the mid-range category, with affordable monthly membership fees.

"We seek to reach working people and others with busy lives who want to find a way to fit working out into their daily schedules."

Business bosses have said they hope the gym's opening hours will help promote the evening economy in the town as well as drawing extra footfall to the town centre.

The statement continues: "Anytime Fitness has a tested, successful business model that franchisees follow to create vibrant gyms that contribute positively to their local area.

"The proposed moderately priced, accessible Anytime Fitness Gym would encourage health and fitness in the local community, and contribute to supporting the wellbeing of local residents."

The Newland Street building was used as a shop, but has been empty for seven years.
