A man who robbed a motorcyclist armed with an axe and hammer in Laindon before crashing into a garden fence has been jailed for two years and three months.

Reece Brown, 21, of Merrylands, Laindon, appeared at Basildon Crown Court yesterday and was sentenced to two years and three months for robbery and six months for possession of a bladed article, to run concurrently.

He received no separate penalty for driving otherwise than in accordance with a licence after previously pleaded guilty to the offences at Basildon Crown Court on Friday, November 24

On Thursday, October 19, a man reported at 6.30am that his scooter had been stolen overnight in Bryon Court, Laindon, before locating it in Merrylands at 2pm with its ignition barrel missing. 

The victim attempted to walk his bike home, only to be confronted by Brown armed with weapons.

Brown rode the bike away before crashing into a garden fence in High Road and running off with a head injury.

He later called the ambulance service for his injuries and was later arrested and charged.

Investigating officer Dc Robert Lewis, of Basildon CID, said: “After the victim located his stolen motorbike to an address, Brown approached him and threatened him with a weapons.

"He then took the victim’s bike, rode off and then crashed shortly afterwards.

"Brown was injured and needed hospital treatment and called paramedics claiming that he had been assaulted, however, we saw through his lies and arrested him in hospital.

"Brown robbed his victim while armed and he will now face the consequences of his actions locked in his prison cell."
