The animal charity PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) wrote to one shopping centre in Braintree asking it to stop using live reindeer during events.
The charity said the practice, used at George Yard and Freeport Braintree, was cruel and sent a damaging message to young people.
It argued the animals belong in the wild and were unable to roam free when penned up during events.
The Times is now asking its readers what they think.
