Witham Dramatic Club will be presenting Sugar Daddies for four nights.

The play is one of the more recent by Tony award winning playwright Sir Alan Ayckbourn, Sugar Daddies follows Sasha, a young student who helps Father Christmas into her sister’s flat.

The magic of Christmas is lost though, as we discover that the bearded guest is not actually Father Christmas, but instead an elderly man named Val.

The two are properly introduced.

Sasha is new to the country and is studying, with ambitions to open her own restaurant, while Val is a retired policeman.

When Sasha’s sister, Chloe, returns home to find Val in her flat, she is bewildered that a stranger has been invited in — and Val leaves.

When a bunch of flowers arrives, Chloe assumes they are for her, from her boyfriend — but the pair discover that they were actually sent for Sasha, by none other than Val.

So begins a tale of control, betrayed innocence and complex relationships in which people are not necessarily what they seem.

With moments of high comedy and dark undertones, this is one of Ayckbourn’s most rounded plays.

Sir Ayckbourn is a prolific member of the dramatic arts, He has seen several of his plays performed in London’s West End, and just as impressively, on Broadway in New York.

The 78-year-old has two Laurence Olivier Awards and is known for his comedy works, having won multiple Evening Standard Awards for Best Comedy — so an opportunity to see one of his plays performed in Witham is expected to draw in the crowds.

Tickets for this very entertaining play are just £12 each and are available in person from Witham Town Hall, open Monday to Friday from 9am to 4.40pm.

They can also be purchased online from withamdramatic.co.uk or by phone on 0345 017 8717.
