A former police station has gone up sale for £875,000, more than a year after it officially closed.

The front counter of Witham Police Station closed in February 2016, although PCSO support was offered until May.

Property consultants Kemsley LLP have now been instructed to market the property, which is almost 6,000 sq ft over two floors.

Listed as potentially suitable for residential redevelopment, it is believed the property could be turned into flats, with prices for two-bedroom properties in Witham starting at around £160,000.

The average size for flats in England and Wales is 49 sq m, meaning the station could be home to about 11 flats, not including the potential to develop the surrounding land and outbuilding.

Money raised from the sale is part of an Essex Police initiative to save £63 million by closing eight stations across the county, cutting customer contact staff from 98 to 36 and making 160 of the county’s PCSOs redundant.

At the time, former Police and Crime Commissioner Nick Alston said Essex Police had the lowest reserves in the country.

He said: “It has been my firm and consistent view Essex Police is underfunded for the tasks we ask of it and by comparison with other forces.

“At the national level I will continue to make the case for a review of the funding formula.

“Changes proposed by the Home Office last year would have seen funding for Essex Police increase by more than £10million.”

Figures from a Freedom of Information request also revealed Maldon Police Station, which is considerably smaller than Witham’s, will soon be on sale for more than £400,000.
