A GROUP of knitters got to showcase their woollen masterpieces at a special exhibition at Alexandra Palace.

The Dolphin WI, from Braintree, spent four days displaying their knitted Braintree landmarks at the Knitting & Stitching Show in London last week.

The group of ladies started knitting together about two years ago, when they created a stunning take on St Michael’s Church.

They have gone on to create woolly replicas of Braintree museum, library, the old town hall, water tower, The Swan pub, the entrance to George Yard and the inside of St Peter’s Church.

The group were invited back to Alexandra Palace having shown their creations at the Women’s Institute fair earlier this year.

Elaine Pye, a member of the group, said: “Our first model was St Michael’s Church which we made for the 100 years of the WI.

“Our idea was to make that model of the church and that was going to be it.

“We decided to keep on doing it and now we have ten buildings.

“We really wanted to try and promote Braintree.

“We were asked back and we had a lovely time, there have been so many people showing their appreciation.

“So many people had never heard of Braintree and are now going to come and visit.”

The designs are on show at Braintree Town Hall and Braintree Library, covered in specially-made glass cases to protect them.

The knitters hope to find a permanent home for the masterpieces and create a heritage trail to showcase the town.

Dolphin WI meets on the fourth Thursday evening each month in Braintree Community Centre
