TWINS are celebrating their golden anniversary 50 years after holding a double wedding.

Doreen Morrison, from Braintree, married Robert Humphrey and twin sister Dorothy, from Stisted, married Brian Sargent, in 1967, just one day before their 21st birthdays.

On their wedding day, the girls both walked down the aisle by their father, Jock Morrison.

They entered St Andrews Church, Chelmsford, to the music of Scottish uncle, Thomas Morrison playing the pipes.

Mrs Humphrey said: “We had our wedding together because of the expense.

“We walked down the aisle together and we went in the same car.

“It’s amazing to think it has been 50 years.”

Her husband Robert Humphrey, 72, said: “In 1960 I moved from Edinburgh where I stayed with my grandparents for three months.

“My mother lived in Chelmsford but I moved there to get a job.

“I met Doreen at a new year dance in 1963, but Brian and Dorothy met through work.

Mrs Sargent said: “It certainly doesn’t feel like 50 years.

“We look back and we think, where have the years gone?

“There are not many couples who can say they have reached their golden anniversary.”

The twins and their husbands all worked at the Chelmsford Marconi company at the time.

The Morrison sisters were typists, Mr Humphrey worked as an instrument maker and Mr Sargent, now 74, was a maintenance manager.

Mr and Mrs Humphrey have lived in Braintree for four years, while Mr and Mrs Sargent have lived in their Stisted house, their first house, since 1967.

The Sargents did not have a honeymoon, but the Humphreys visited Jersey to a wedding a week after their own nuptials.

The couples met at the Green Dragon pub on London Road, Braintree, on Friday September for a meal to celebrate their golden weddings.

The twins, now 71, married on Saturday September 23 in 1967.

Mrs and Mrs Humphrey are going on a Mediterranean cruise to celebrate.

Mr and Mrs Sargent will visit Thailand.
