A popular chain of dessert houses looks set to to open its latest store in Braintree, bringing more than 30 new jobs to the high street.

Architecture Design Limited has applied on behalf of its client, UK Desserts Ltd, to change the usage of the former Bailey's Bar, in Braintree High Street, from a bar to a dessert parlour.

Chain Kaspa’s are behind the plans with the company hoping to add to the dozens of restaurants it already operates throughout the country.

The parlour’s menu will boast Gelato, waffles, crepes, milkshakes, smoothies and sundaes, made from Italian ingredients, all suitable for vegetarians.

Kapsa’s are described as lively, vibrant and family orientated establishments and are known for becoming must visit destinations for both residents in the area and tourists.

Between eight and ten full-time staff could be employed at the parlour, with a further 30 to 35 part-time staff also needed.

A planning statement reads: “It is clear that the proposed use as a dessert parlour will bring a change of use that will provide something very different and unique to the retail mix.

“With the building laying vacant, this proposal will without question generate a footfall and boost to the vitality and viability of the area that is much needed.

“With the style of this parlour also meaning that there will be no detrimental effect upon the local environment, we believe the application should receive the full support of the council.”

The new Braintree store would feature a higher proportion of sit-in customers due to large size of the premises but will also offer takeaway food and drinks.

The nearest Kaspa’s to Braintree is currently located in Colchester. The operating hours of the premises would be between 10am and 11pm Monday to Sunday.

Bailey’s Bar was reopened by the team from the Boars Head pub in December - it had been shut for several years. It closed for the second time in April when a new landlord took control of the property.
