A kind hearted builder stopped traffic on a roundabout to help an ambulance.

A man in a trade van stopped on a roundabout to block traffic.

The traffic would have been in the way of emergency services treating a woman who had fallen on the pavement.

The man, who parked his white van on the Coggeshall Road roundabout at 4pm on Monday August 21, brought traffic to a standstill.

This then cleared the road for the ambulance to quickly leave the scene.

The man, who did not want to be named, said he was just doing what was right.

"I don't know the lady, I didn't see what happened, but I was passing, I saw the situation.

"I don't know what got into me, but I knew it was the right thing to do."

Angry motorists who could not see the accident shouted and swore at the man as they came to a stand-still on the Coggeshall Roundabout.

But the builder went up to each person on the roundabout, taking the time to explain what had happened.

He said: "People were trying to over-take the ambulance, on the road, so I thought I'd block the exit on the roundabout so cars can't come down and get in the way.

"I don't want any publicity, nor a reward.

"I just think I'd like people to do the same for me!

"I really do hope the lady is OK, that's my top concern."

One woman who watched the man said he was mad.

She said:"It's brave and he has good intentions, but he's stopping drivers from getting home if they lived down that street.

"I suppose it's a really nice thing to do for someone, and he's brave.

"But he's confusing people going round the roundabout, but it is quite funny to see!"

Paramedics treated a patient, believed to be in her 30s, near to the Sainsbury’s petrol station on Coggeshall Road, Braintree.

She was rushed to hospital with back problems after she had fallen in the street.

The man who helped said he was not a hero and said it is the smaller things that matter.

He said: "What I did helped the lady, I understand this, but I don't want recognition.

"All I care about is doing the right thing.

"I'm in the building game, and accidents happen near enough all the time.

"If that had happened to me, I am sure others in Braintree would have done the same.

"My employer won't believe me, they'll think I'm sitting in a cafe or something."
